The story centers on PJ Halliday, a 63-year-old divorced alcoholic and million-dollar lottery winner living in Pondville, Massachusetts. Despite his sudden wealth, PJ's life has been defined by tragedy: the sudden death of his eldest daughter, a failed marriage, and a failing heart that has already survived three heart attacks.
When PJ spots the obituary of his old romantic rival, he discovers that his high school sweetheart, Michelle Cobb, is newly single. Ignited by a sudden burst of purpose, PJ resolves to drive across the country to the Tender Hearts Retirement Community in Tucson, Arizona, to win her back.
Before he can leave, another local tragedy leaves him as the sudden legal guardian of his estranged brother’s orphaned grandchildren—nine-year-old Ollie and 10-year-old Luna. Undeterred, PJ packs up the kids, recruits his adrift 26-year-old daughter Sophie to help babysit, and hits the road. Joining their ranks is Pancakes, a former nursing home therapy cat with an eerie, hilarious knack for predicting when someone is about to die
